Hi Everyone!
Several members of my team and I just completed a webinar with Patrick Van Horne, author of the highly recommended Left of Bang. It was an hour well spent.
During the webinar, Patrick covered what he termed “assessing universal and uncontrollable aspects of nonverbal behavior.” These include clusters of behaviors where people will fall into one of four groupings: Dominant, Submissive, Comfortable, or Uncomfortable. He opened up each of these groups with more details during the webinar, explaining methods of attaining more accurate information on which to be base threat recognition.
One take-away from this webinar was how classic models of Situational Awareness such as the Cooper Color Code are good, though still lacking if one doesn’t know what it is for which you’re being aware. One can look for threats, but if you don’t know what to for, it is more “hopeful looking” than “informed looking.”
He left us with an actionable take-away based on a formula he shared at the beginning of the webinar, this being “Baseline + Anomaly = Decision.” The take-away was:
For anywhere you go, you may ask these 3 questions:
- What’s going on here?
- What would make someone stand out here?
- What would I do about it?
This was an amazing hour of learning more about threat recognition, being proactive, and staying left of bang.
Thanks Patrick!
Awesome review, I forgot to add this to my goodreads list until now haha.
